Choosing a college for biology and pre-med in Texas?

As a student interested in pre-med, I'm looking for Texas colleges with reputable biology programs. Which schools should I consider that are strong in both biology and pre-med preparation?

You're fortunate to be in Texas, which has quite a few institutions that offer excellent programs in biology and pre-med.

Firstly, the University of Texas at Austin has an established reputation for providing a strong undergraduate education in biology. Their College of Natural Sciences also offers a Health Professions Office which provides advising, resources, and other supports to pre-med students.

Baylor University is another excellent choice. Their pre-med program has a reputation for a high med school acceptance rate and their biology program offers opportunities for undergraduates to get involved in research.

Rice University shouldn't be overlooked either. It's a smaller institution which means more personalized attention, and they have strong biology and pre-med programs. Plus, they're located in Houston which is a major hub for medical innovation - think Texas Medical Center.

Texas A&M is also notable for its good biological sciences program and their “Pre-Med Fellows” program designed to enhance pre-med students’ competitiveness for medical school.

You also have University of Houston, which offers a strong biology program and a dedicated Pre-health Professions Office that provides resources and advising for pre-med students.

Also, consider private liberal arts colleges like Trinity University and Southwestern University that are known for their strong science programs and pre-med advising.

Always remember when making your choice to consider factors beyond academics, such as location, campus culture, cost, availability of research opportunities, and access to healthcare settings for shadowing and volunteering. Each of these institutions varies in those attributes.

Lastly, don't hesitate to reach out to the pre-med advising offices at these colleges for more information—they can be a great resource as you weigh your options.
