What are the best clubs in high school for college prep?

I'm looking into high school clubs and want to choose the ones that'll help me in college admissions. Which clubs offer opportunities to develop useful skills and demonstrate leadership?

The clubs that will best serve you in college preparation ultimately depend on your interests and future goals. All clubs offer the potential for you to develop transferable skills and demonstrate leadership, especially if you aspire to, and eventually hold, officer roles. However, there are few examples of clubs that can provide diverse experiences:

1. Debate Club/Team: This could improve your public speaking skills and help you get comfortable articulating complex thoughts clearly. Often, these clubs compete at the regional, state, or even national level, offering opportunities to get a Tier 2 or even Tier 1 activity on the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars.

2. Student Government: Serving in student government provides avenues to show leadership, problem-solving, and initiative. It's also a traditional avenue for demonstrating commitment to school and community.

3. Key Club: As a community service-based organization, Key Club can demonstrate your dedication to helping others and improving your community. Volunteering is often viewed positively by colleges.

4. Science/Math/Computer Clubs: If you're interested in the STEM field, participating in clubs like Math Olympiad, Robotics Club, or Computer Science Club give you more exposure to these fields and might provide competition opportunities.

5. Newspaper/Yearbook: If you're interested in humanities or thinking of majoring in journalism or English, helping produce your school's newspaper can show your commitment to research, writing, and possibly design.

6. Model United Nations (MUN) or Mock Trial: Both of these clubs can offer skills such as research, critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork. Schools often attend conferences or competitions, enabling you to compete with peers from a wider range of places.

Remember, your level of involvement and what you accomplish in a club matters more than the sheer number of clubs you join. It's better to dedicate your time to a few clubs you're passionate about rather than spreading yourself too thin.
