Best College for Set Design in NYC?

I'm aiming for a major in set design and really want to study in NYC. Does anyone know which college has the strongest program in that area? I'm looking for a school with hands-on experience and good connections in theater.

NYC is an excellent hub for students aiming for a career in set design, given its lively and vibrant theater scene. There are few schools offering robust programs.

If you're looking for a more experimental or avant-garde approach, you might consider New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. They offer an undergraduate program in Design for Stage & Film that focuses heavily on set design, among other elements. The courses focus both on the conceptual and practical aspects of design, with ample opportunities for students to gain practical experience through internships and working on productions.

Columbia University also offers an acclaimed MFA program in Theatre Design/Technology for students who are looking to specialize post-undergrad, but this may not be of interest if you're looking solely for undergraduate programs.

The City College of New York (CUNY) offers a BA in Theatre Design and Technology with a concentration in Set Design at their Theatre Arts Program, which can be a good option as well. The program not only focuses on design principles but also gives students a chance to work on actual productions, allowing you to build a portfolio while you learn.

Finally, you may also consider Pace University, which provides a BFA in Production and Design for Stage & Screen. This program is interdisciplinary, with coursework that includes set design, lighting, costume design, and more.

All these institutions have strong ties to the theater industry and could provide good networking opportunities. However, remember to also look beyond the curriculum - the culture of the school, support for internships, collaborations with local theater companies, are all very significant aspects when deciding where to apply.
