Best High School Clubs for a College Resume?

Hey folks, I'm trying to figure out which high school clubs would look good on my college applications. Any suggestions on clubs that colleges really like to see?

Colleges like to see any club that shows a high level of commitment and leadership. This typically involves clubs where you play a significant role, actively contribute, and ideally hold a leadership position.

Here are a few types of clubs that could be impactful:

1. Academic Clubs: These are clubs like Math Team, Science Olympiad, or Debate Team where you can demonstrate your intellectual capacity beyond the classroom.

2. Service Oriented Clubs: If you're part of Key Club, Interact Club, or a community service club, this shows colleges that you care about giving back to your community.

3. Leadership Clubs: Student Government or Class Council can show your capacity for leadership, organization, and dealing with school issues.

4. Club related to your intended major: If you're passionate about art and want to major in it in college, being part of Art Club (and ideally having a leadership role) could help.

5. Clubs where you can compete: Participation in clubs that offer opportunities to compete at a regional, state, or national level such as Mock Trial, Model UN, etc. can be very valuable, especially if you win awards or secure high rankings.

Remember, the quality of your involvement matters more than the quantity. Rather than being a passive member of many clubs, it's more beneficial to be actively engaged in a few. For example, starting a club, organizing events, leading initiatives, or winning club-related awards shows a higher level of dedication and can place you in Tier 2 or Tier 1 of the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars. These distinctions indicate high levels of achievement and leadership, which colleges appreciate.

Note that impressive extracurriculars are not limited to traditional clubs. Internships, research projects, and self-started initiatives can also be very impactful. It's all about your level of involvement, achievement, and passion!
