I'm considering UC San Diego, but I'm confused about which of the six colleges would be best for an art major. Does anyone have advice on which one offers the best support and opportunities for art students?
The beautiful thing about the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is that no matter which of the six residential colleges you end up in, your major — in this case, Art — stays the same. The UCSD colleges don't influence your academic major or the kind of academic advising you'll receive for your major. The Art Department at UCSD is unified across all colleges.
The six colleges at UCSD — Revelle, Muir, Marshall, Warren, Roosevelt, and Sixth — differ primarily in terms of general education (GE) requirements and the overall philosophy that guides their respective educational programming. In other words, each college has a unique philosophy and set of general education requirements, but this would not have a significant impact on your studies or opportunities as an art major.
Instead of choosing a college based on your major, it's better, in this case, to select a college at UCSD based on which college's philosophy, values, and general education requirements resonate with you the most. Which social issues are you most passionate about? How interdisciplinary do you want your education to be? These are the kind of questions you should consider when choosing which UCSD college to apply to or rank higher.
One thing art students sometimes consider is whether a college has more lenient or flexible GE requirements, which can sometimes provide more space to take additional art-related courses or to double major or minor. But the difference tends to be minimal and each UCSD college has a unique offering of academic advising, resources, and experiential learning opportunities that are beneficial for all students, regardless of major.
Remember that UC applications are due from October 1 to November 30, so make sure you have your college selection finalized by then!
Good luck with your application!
