UCLA Business Economics requirements

Hi there! I'm really interested in UCLA's business economics program. Does anyone know what the major's prerequisites and requirements are? Also, what can I do now in high school to prepare myself for this path?

Hello! UCLA's business economics program is a popular and competitive major. To be eligible for this program, you must complete the prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better. The prerequisites include:

1. Calculus (MATH 31A and 31B, or equivalent courses)

2. Introduction to Economics (ECON 1 or 2)

3. Introduction to Accounting (MGMT 1A and 1B, or equivalent courses)

Once you're admitted into the major, there are several required upper-division courses, such as intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theories, along with electives related to business, economics, and management.

To prepare yourself in high school, you can take a few steps:

1. Focus on math: Take advanced math classes, such as AP Calculus AB or BC, as a strong math foundation is essential for this major.

2. Take economics courses: If your high school offers AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics or a general economics class, enroll in these courses to familiarize yourself with the subject.

3. Participate in business/economics-related extracurriculars: Join clubs such as DECA, FBLA, or the Economics Club to gain more experience and demonstrate your interest in the field.

4. Hone your analytical and communication skills: Focus on improving your writing, public speaking, and critical thinking abilities, as these will be crucial in the business world.

5. Explore summer programs or internships: Look for summer programs, internships, or job-shadowing opportunities related to business or economics to gain practical experience and learn more about the field.

Lastly, remember that UCLA looks at applicants holistically. In addition to preparing specifically for the business economics major, also excel academically in all subject areas, have strong test scores (if applicable), and participate in extracurricular activities that demonstrate your passions and leadership skills. Good luck!
