How many high school students have jobs in 2024?

As high school students in 2024, are most of us working? I'm wondering about how common it is to have a job during the school year and if it affects academics or college applications.

Currently, accurate statistics from 2024 on the percentage of high school students who have jobs are not readily available. However, the trend over the past decade has been for fewer high school students to work during the school year.

Historically, about 30-40% of U.S. high school students have been employed part-time during the school year. That said, the number fluctuates depending on factors such as region, socioeconomic status, and individual school policies.

Regarding the impact on academics, working a reasonable amount of hours can teach critical skills such as discipline, time management, and responsibility. However, working too many hours can lead to diminishing returns if the student is unable to dedicate enough time to their academic commitments.

As for college applications, having a job can be seen as positive by admissions officers if it demonstrates leadership, commitment, or pertinent career interest. But, remember, it is also important to balance work with academic achievement and extracurricular involvement as those components are also influential parts of a college application.
