Transitioning from enlisted military to college MBA programs?

I've been considering enlisting in the military but also have an interest in pursuing an MBA later on. Do colleges look favorably on military experience when applying to MBA programs? What should I plan for?

Military experience can certainly be viewed favorably in MBA admissions. Admissions committees often value the leadership experience, problem-solving skills, and tenacity that individuals gain from military service. Moreover, serving in the military may provide you with unique experiences that you can draw upon in your application essays.

In terms of preparation, there are several things you can do:

1. GMAT/GRE: Many MBA programs require the GMAT or GRE. Consider setting aside time for prep and to take the test before applying. Your military schedule may influence when and how you can prepare for these exams, so plan accordingly.

2. School Research: Begin researching MBA programs that interest you and align with your career goals. Schools often have different cultures, resources, and specialties which may suit you better depending on your aspirations.

3. Networking: Try to connect with MBA students or alumni who have a military background. They will likely have valuable insights and advice. Many MBA programs host events specifically for military applicants.

4. Essays: Reflect on how your military experience could contribute to your MBA cohort and how an MBA will help you accomplish your career goals. Crafting compelling essays is crucial in the MBA application process.

5. Post-Military Work Experience: Some applicants transition from the military to the civilian workforce before applying to MBA programs to gain additional business experience. However, this isn't a requirement and you may apply directly from active service.

Remember, every applicant's path is unique and what works for one person may not work for another. Keep an open mind and find the path that suits your goals best. Good luck!
