What Does a High School Job Coach Do?

I've heard about job coaches for high school students, but I'm not exactly sure what their role is. Can anyone explain what a high school job coach does and how they might help students like me explore career options?

High school job coaches play a pivotal role in promoting career awareness and exploration among high school students. They work with both individuals and groups, providing personalized guidance based on each student's interests, abilities, and long-term career goals.

One key responsibility of a job coach is to help students identify their unique strengths and interests. This often involves conducting assessments to gain a better understanding of the paths that could be a good match for a student. Afterward, they provide information about a variety of careers that match those areas of interest and strength.

A job coach also supports students in building employability skills. This may involve teaching students how to create a résumé, prepare for job interviews, or develop strong communication and leadership skills. These foundational skills are not only beneficial for securing part-time or summer jobs in high school but are also valuable in post-high school and career ventures.

Job coaches might also provide support for students who are already working, helping them with strategies to handle job-related challenges or improve on-the-job performance.

Moreover, job coaches can be instrumental in establishing connections with local businesses and securing internships or job shadowing opportunities for students. These experiences are invaluable in providing students with a hands-on experience of what a particular job or industry entails.

Keep in mind, however, that not all high schools offer job coaching services, and those that do may have different specificities in their approach based on the unique needs and capabilities of their students. It could be beneficial to reach out to your school counselor to see if such resources exist at your school and learn how to take advantage of them if they do.
