What's the minimum age to enlist in the US military?

I'm trying to figure out when I can officially enlist in the US military. What is the minimum legal age to do so, and are there any exceptions or special considerations I should be aware of as a high school student?

The minimum age to enlist in the United States military is generally 17 years old; however, there are a few caveats to this. Firstly, if you are 17 years old and wish to enlist, you will need to have parental or guardian consent. Secondly, all branches of the military require enlistees to be at least 18 years old to enlist without parental consent.

As a high school student, you should know that even if you do enlist at 17 or 18, you won't start active duty until after you graduate from high school. Being in high school allows you to learn more about military service through programs like JROTC and to consider all your post-high school options, including college and civilian careers as well as the military. Keep in mind as well that early planning and training can increase your likelihood of being accepted into more specialized and competitive military programs and roles.

Finally, note that while 17 is the minimum age to enlist, the military also has an upper age limit, which varies by branch and whether one is enlisting or joining as an officer. Age limits typically range from 27 to 42 years old.
