How can I find seasonal jobs for high school students in NYC?

I'm a high school student living in NYC and I'm looking to get a seasonal job to earn some extra cash. Does anyone know any good opportunities or companies that hire students my age? Any tips would be great!

New York City is quite expansive and offers a range of opportunities for high school students like you to find seasonal work. Seasonal jobs typically become available during the holidays, over weekends, and summertime.

1. Retail: Many stores (grocery stores, clothing retailers, etc.) require extra help around the holidays and sometimes in the summer to manage increased customer traffic. Check local businesses and malls for seasonal job listings. Positions could range from cashier to stocking shelves to assisting customers.

2. Restaurants and Fast Food: Many places may need extra help covering shifts, especially during the tourists' high season. Roles can vary from busser to waiter to dishwasher, depending on the establishment.

3. Tutoring: If you excel in a particular subject, consider offering tutoring services to younger students. This is especially needed around midterms and finals.

4. Babysitting/Nannying: Many families need temporary assistance during school breaks when kids are out of school.

5. Parks & Recreation/Pool Lifeguard: During the summer, parks departments or local pool clubs often need more lifeguards, park attendants, and concession staff.

6. Art Galleries/Museums: They often have increased temporary roles during high visitation periods or new exhibitions.

Start looking for seasonal opportunities at places you already frequent and ask if they will need extra help soon. This could be a local library, cafe, or neighborhood store. Most places, especially smaller businesses, will appreciate the initiative. Always remember to have a resume ready and be prepared to fill out an application on the spot.

When using online resources, consider job sites such as Indeed and LinkedIn, which allow you to filter job postings by location, part-time, temporary work, and entry-level. Appily (previously known as Cappex) is another platform offering job listings for high school students. Just be aware that you may face stiff competition in online spaces as the postings are visible to a larger array of job seekers.

Always be sure to check the age requirements for the job before you apply. Many employers require you to be at least 16 years old due to labor laws, but there is plenty of work still available if you are younger than that age. Ensure you consider how your work may fit with your school schedule, and remember to leave time for rest as well, especially during critical exam periods.
