How Does Having a Degree Impact Enlisting in the Military?

If I earn a college degree before enlisting in the military, does it open up more opportunities or higher ranks for me? I'm trying to weigh my options between going straight into the military or getting a degree first.

Having a bachelor's degree does open up a number of different opportunities for you in the military. There are a handful of things you can do specifically because you have a degree.

Firstly, completing your degree before enlisting means you could have the opportunity to join as an officer, rather than as an enlisted member. Officers are responsible for leading and managing enlisted members.

Military officers have to meet more stringent qualifications than enlisted personnel and hold a bachelor's degree at minimum. As an officer, you'll have the opportunity for leadership roles, and you'll also receive higher pay. This pay difference can be quite significant over time when compared to enlisted ranks.

Secondly, a degree can give you a broader range of job opportunities within the military. For example, certain specialized roles like physicians, lawyers, and engineers require you to hold a degree in the field.

Lastly, if you're considering making the military a career, having a degree could make you a more attractive candidate for later promotion, even if you initially enlisted without having completed your degree. Keep in mind, however, that the military offers educational benefits, so it's possible to both serve and earn your degree if you elect to go this route.

It's important to talk with a recruiter and discuss your goals to get an accurate picture of how a degree can benefit you in your specific situation.
