How does the military pay scale work for enlisted personnel in 2024?

Can someone explain how the pay system works for enlisted members in the U.S. military in 2024? I'm curious to know what the starting salary looks like and how it might progress over time.

Enlisted military pay in 2024 is determined by two main factors: pay grade and years of service. Pay grade is largely determined by your rank, while years of service represent, as the name suggests, how long you've served in the military.

When you start your military career as an enlisted member, you'll typically begin at pay grade E-1. The monthly base pay for an E-1 with less than two years of service can be around $1,865.

As you gain more time in service and promote to higher ranks, your pay grade will increase. For example, after a promotion to the rank of E-2, your monthly base pay can increase to around $2,261, and further advancement to E-3 could see a base pay of approximately $2,377 per month.

Most promotions, particularly in the early stages of your military career, are often based on time in service and time in grade. However, as you progress to more senior ranks, promotions become more competitive and are often contingent on performance evaluations and the needs of your branch of service.

In addition to base pay, enlisted members may also receive allowances for housing, if they don't receive military housing, and subsistence, which is a food allowance. Special duty pay or incentive pay may also apply for certain roles or under specific circumstances- for example, flight duty, hazardous duty, or for being stationed in certain geographical locations. The military also provides comprehensive healthcare benefits for service members.

Remember, each branch of the military has its unique career progression timeline, so promotion rates and pay grades can differ. Additionally, the figures I've stated are approximate and can change slightly each year as they are typically adjusted for cost of living increases.

It's also worth mentioning that there are significant educational and career training opportunities in the military, both of which can be big advantages when you transition to civilian life.
