What's involved in a physical for military enlistment?

I'm preparing to enlist in the military and want to know what to expect from the physical examination. Are there specific requirements or tests I should be preparing for right now?

When you enlist in the military, you'll have to go through a comprehensive physical examination, known as the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) physical. The aim of this examination is to determine whether or not your body can withstand the physical rigors of military service. Here's a general idea of what is involved in the MEPS physical:

1. Medical History Review: Before you even get to the physical examination, you'll fill out a detailed medical history form. Be prepared to answer questions about past illnesses, surgeries, or ongoing health issues. It's essential to be truthful while filling out this form, because fraudulent enlistment can result in discharge.

2. Standard Physical Exam: This part of the process is quite similar to a physical you'd get from your own physician. The doctor will check your height, weight, vision, hearing, blood pressure and pulse rate. They'll also check general indicators of health like your heart, lungs, abdomen, and skin condition.

3. Vision Test: The vision test checks both your distant and near visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision. Depending on the branch of service and the job you want, you may have to meet specific vision standards.

4. Hearing Test: In the hearing test or audiogram, you will put on headphones and have to press a button or raise your hand when you hear tones at different volumes and pitches.

5. Medical Examinations: There will be more specialized medical examinations as well. For instance, men will have a hernia check. Women may have to provide details regarding their menstrual cycle.

6. Physical Fitness Test: Depending on the branch of the military, you may have to do physical fitness tests as part of your medical examination. These tests can include activities like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and a timed run.

7. Drug and Alcohol Tests: You'll also be screened for drug and alcohol use. Usually, this involves a urine test. Again, it's important to disclose any substance use as dishonesty could lead to disqualification.

It is important to note that the standards will differ based on the branch of the military you intend to join (Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Space Force). Furthermore, some roles will require passing additional physical or medical checks. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you talk to your recruiter to get a precise idea of the requirements relevant to your specific situation.
