Can I become a police officer with just a high school diploma?

I’m interested in becoming a police officer after high school and am wondering if it's possible with just a high school diploma. Do most police departments hire without requiring college degrees, and are there any additional tests or training I'd need?

Yes, it's certainly possible to begin a career as a police officer with just a high school diploma or GED, as this is a minimum requirement in many places. However, keep in mind that police departments have different hiring requirements and some may prefer or require applicants to have some college education or a degree in a related field, such as criminal justice.

Even if a college degree isn't mandatory, many law enforcement agencies encourage further education as it may offer a broader perspective and additional skills that can be beneficial in the field. Having a degree may also impact opportunities for advancement throughout your career.

When it comes to additional training, each police department operates its own Police Academy where new recruits undergo rigorous training that covers law, ethics, tactical procedures, and physical fitness, among other things. This training is often several weeks to a few months long.

Additionally, potential police officers typically need to pass written and physical fitness tests, as well as a background check and medical examination, before entering a Police Academy. Some departments also require a psychological evaluation to ensure candidates can handle the stress of law enforcement work.

It's important to research the requirements of the specific police departments you're interested in, as they can vary from department to department and state to state. For example, certain places may have age and citizenship requirements as well.

In sum, while it's definitely possible to become a police officer with just a high school diploma, further education and rigorous physical and academic training are typically necessary as well.
