Finding Summer Jobs for High School Students in DC?

I'm a high school student in DC hoping to find a summer job. What are some typical employers or programs that hire students over the summer? Any tips for the application process?

Firstly, it's important to note that the laws governing employment for minors might limit the types of jobs you can do and the hours you can work. As a high school student, you're likely allowed to do lighter, non-hazardous jobs depending on your exact age.

Many places often hire high school students during the summer. Fast food restaurants, local retail stores, and movie theaters are some common spots where high schoolers tend to work. Check the major local businesses in the sector, as well as smaller establishments that may provide more flexibility.

In DC specifically, there's also the DC Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), provided by the Office of Youth Programs (OYP), which could be a great opportunity. This program provides stipends to youth aged 14-24 to work in public and private sector placements over the summer.

For the application process, aim to submit applications as early as possible - many summer jobs start hiring in the spring. When preparing your resume, list the extracurricular activities you've participated in, any leadership positions you've held, and your academic achievements. Remember, just because you don't have job experience doesn't mean you don't have valuable skills to offer. It's about conveying your transferable skills: those you’ve gained through your coursework, extracurricular activities, sports, and volunteer work.

When possible, try to get a work certificate (also known as a work permit) ahead of time. That way, you'll be ready to start working right away. Lastly, be prepared for potential interviews. Anticipate the type of questions that employers might ask and consider how to respond to them.

Good luck! Landing a summer job can be a great way to gain experience and learn more about what types of work interest you.
