Can foreigners enlist in the US military?

I'm an international student considering joining the US military, but I'm not a citizen. Are there any specific criteria or paths for foreigners to enlist in the US military? What are the legal requirements?

The United States military does allow non-citizens to enlist but under specific criteria. The legal requirements are generally that a person must be a permanent resident (have a Green Card) to join.

As a foreigner who is not a permanent resident, you may be eligible to enlist through the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program. However, MAVNI is not always open — its availability depends on the needs of the military and is limited to individuals who have certain critical skills. These skills are typically healthcare professionals or individuals who are fluent in certain languages that are strategically significant to the Department of Defense.

Another option would be to first enroll in a college program and subsequently apply for the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. ROTC is a college program that prepares students for military service. There have been cases where ROTC graduates who are non-U.S. citizens have obtained their Green Card and served in the U.S. military.

And remember, the whole process does not grant you citizenship directly — but it can make it easier to become a citizen. Military service may expedite the naturalization process.

Of course, all these scenarios are subject to change, based on U.S. immigration policies and the needs of the military. I recommend you consult with a recruiter and immigration professional to get the most updated and accurate information.
