What factors affect the salary for enlisted military personnel?

I'm curious about the pay for enlisted personnel in the military. What influences how much they earn? Does it vary a lot based on things like rank, experience, or branch of the military? Trying to understand what future compensation might look like.

The salary for enlisted military personnel is determined by a variety of factors, including rank, years of service, and any specific duties or roles they might fulfill. Your branch of the military (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Space Force) doesn't have a direct impact on your base salary–all branches follow the same pay scale.

1. Rank: The most significant determinant of an enlisted service member's salary is military rank. Rank refers to the level of responsibility and leadership a service member holds. Each rise in rank comes with a pay increase. There's a structured path of advancement in the military, starting with junior enlisted ranks and leading upwards towards senior NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers) and warrant officers.

2. Years of Service: Experience also matters when it comes to military pay. As one serves more years in the military, their pay will generally increase. The pay scale in the military is designed to reward both rank and length of service.

3. Duties: Service members who have special duties or responsibilities may receive additional pay. For instance, those with hazardous duties or those who have roles requiring particular skills or responsibilities could receive bonus pay. “Special and Incentive pay” can be significant and range broadly, based on the specific role and duties.

4. Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA): Depending upon the duty station, additional pay may be granted to account for the cost of living in various locations, particularly when stationed in high-cost areas.

5. Basic Allowance for Housing and Subsistence (BAH and BAS): These are allowances that military personnel may be eligible to receive. BAH is meant to provide service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian markets and is based on one's rank, dependency status, and location. BAS is a rate meant to provide service members with a supplement to the cost of meals.

Remember that on top of their salary, military personnel also receive health care, subsidized or free housing, food allowances, retirement plans, tuition assistance, and other benefits. These should be considered when evaluating the total compensation of a military service member.
