Can seniors in high school enlist in the military?

I'm about to graduate high school and I'm seriously considering enlisting. How does it work for high school seniors, and what should I know before making this decision? Also, is enlisting right after graduation common?

Yes, high school seniors can enlist in the U.S. military. Please keep in mind that the minimum age to enlist in the armed services is 17 with parental consent, or 18 without parental consent.

Before making this decision, it's important to research the range of military branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force, and consider what role might suit you best. Each branch has different career paths and bases in different locations, so your lifestyle and duties can vary.

It's also advisable to talk to a recruiter. They can provide information about enlistment requirements, which include the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), a test that measures abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military, a health examination, and meeting the physical fitness standards for your desired branch.

It's worth noting that military enlistment will involve a commitment of several years, depending on the branch and role you choose. This can be a great opportunity to gain vocational training, experiences, and benefits such as college tuition assistance. However, it's a big decision that usually involves time away from home and potentially deployment, so consider discussing it with family, friends, and counselors, in addition to military personnel.

Enlisting right after high school is not uncommon, as the military can provide structure, consistent pay and benefits, access to education, and a clear career path during a time when many young adults are still figuring out their next steps.

Remember, it's a significant decision so make sure you gather as much information as you can to make an informed choice. Best of luck with whatever path you choose!
