What is the military enlisted pay scale?

Can anyone shed some light on how the pay scale works for military enlistees? I'm curious about the starting pay and what factors can affect increases in pay over time.

The U.S. military pay scale is determined by a combination of rank (enlisted or commissioned officers) and years of service. Each rank falls under a pay grade, beginning with E-1 for the lowest enlisted rank. As for officers, the pay grade starts at O-1.

A military enlistee starts at the pay grade of E-1. In 2024, a service member at this pay grade, with less than 2 years of service, earns $2,017.20 per month. However, the first enlisted rank (Private in the Army or Airman Basic in the Air Force, for example) often gets a raise to the E-2 pay grade after six months of service, which comes with higher pay.

Keep in mind, that monthly basic pay is just a part of the military's comprehensive compensation package, which also includes allowances for housing and food, tax advantages, healthcare, retirement, and education benefits.

What affects the increases in pay over time? Firstly, Length of Service: With each additional two years of service, your pay increases. Secondly, Promotions: When you get promoted to a higher rank, you move to a higher pay grade. Promotions are typically based on performance and time-in-service requirements.

There's also something called 'Incentive Pay.' This includes additional compensation for skills or duties that involve extra responsibility or risk. Examples might be hazardous duty pay, flight pay, or submarine pay.

Remember these numbers come from the Department of Defense's publicly available pay tables and they can certainly change. Also, individual circumstances can impact how much a service member earns, so this should be perceived as a general guide and not specific financial advice.
