Can you enlist in the military with a GED?

I'm considering joining the military after high school, but I might not finish with a traditional diploma, only a GED. Does anyone know if this is possible, or what requirements I might need to meet?

Sure, the good news is that each branch of the U.S. military does accept enlistees with a General Education Development certificate (GED), although the acceptance often depends on various factors.

First, because the number of recruits with a GED is limited each year, those with a high school diploma are given priority for enlistment. In general, a GED is considered equivalent to a tier 2 high school credential by the military, not tier 1 like a traditional high school diploma. Thus, competition is often stiffer for those with a GED versus a high school diploma, and there may be additional qualifications or requirements.

Second, the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force often require higher ASVAB scores from candidates with a GED compared to those with a high school diploma. The ASVAB or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is a multiple-choice exam that helps the military determine a recruit's potential for success in various occupational areas.

Third, some branches may encourage or require individuals with a GED to earn a certain number of college credits before enlistment. For example, the Air Force generally likes GED holders to have 15 college credits under their belt to be considered tier 1, which is equivalent to some semester hours of education at a college or university.

Lastly, individual circumstances can influence military acceptance, such as the current recruitment goals of the particular branch and the demand for specific roles or positions.

It's always best to speak directly with a recruiter from the branch you're interested in to get the most accurate and detailed information. They can provide you with the most current requirements and advice based on your personal circumstances and interests.
