Can a GED holder enlist in the military?

I left high school before graduating but earned my GED last year. I'm interested in enlisting in the military and want to know if my GED will be accepted and if there are any additional requirements.

Yes, a GED holder can enlist in the U.S. military. However, each branch has specific requirements relating to education level, so you may want to take that into consideration.

For example, the Army accepts more GED enlistees than any other service. They have programs in place such as the Army's GED Plus Enlistment Program, where you can enlist and get sent to one location to get your GED quickly, then start Basic Combat Training (BCT).

The Air Force, on the other hand, has specific ratios for GED holders they will accept. Only one-half of one percent of all Air Force enlistments each year can be GED holders. Similarly, the Navy limits the number of accepted GED holders to no more than five to ten percent each year.

Therefore, while your GED allows you to enlist, you may face further competition compared to those with high school diplomas who are also enrolling. Furthermore, most branches will require you to achieve a certain score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to enlist. Higher scores can improve your chances of getting into specific jobs or training programs within the military.

I would recommend contacting a local recruiter for the branch you're interested in to get the most accurate and up-to-date information and to discuss your circumstances.
