How long is the military enlistment process?

I'm considering enlisting in the military after high school. Can anyone break down how long the enlistment process typically takes from start to finish? Want to plan my timeline around it but I'm not sure what to expect.

The enlistment process for the U.S. military varies depending on the branch you are interested in and your individual circumstances, but here's a rough timeline for a straightforward enlistment:

1. Initial research and contact with a recruiter (1-2 weeks): This period involves you doing research on which branch you want to join. After this, you'll get in contact with a recruiter and schedule a meeting to discuss your options.

2. MEPS and ASVAB (1-2 days): The Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) will examine your physical, moral, and mental standards. You'll need to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a series of tests that help determine your career path in the military.

3. Enlistment process (1-2 weeks): After passing the tests, if you're eligible, you'll pick your job, take the oath of enlistment, and sign your enlistment contract. At this point, you're officially a member of the military.

4. Delay Entry Program (up to 1 year): Some recruits enter the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). They've officially enlisted but have not yet left for training. This time can be used for physical fitness, studying, or personal affairs. The length of this period can range from a few weeks to a year depending on the job you've selected.

5. Basic Training (6-13 weeks depending on the branch): You're sent off to Basic Combat Training (BCT), also known as boot camp.

So, the whole process from initial contact with the recruiter to the end of basic training can take several months. It's crucial to stay in constant communication with your recruiter during this process so you understand what's expected and can plan accordingly. Also, remember that this is a generalized timeline, and factors such as medical issues, waivers, or waiting for a particular job can extend this process.

Good luck with your decision, and I hope this information helps you plan!
