Military Leave Policies for Enlisted Members?

As someone considering enlisting, I want to understand the military's leave policies better. How much leave do enlisted members typically get, and are there differences based on branch or role?

In most branches of the U.S. military, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, active-duty enlisted members typically earn 30 days of leave per year. This leave accrues at a rate of 2.5 days per month. It is not standard to get more or less leave based on your specific role within the military.

The Space Force, being the newest branch, follows the same policy as the Air Force. Members of the Army National Guard and Air Force National Guard, which are reserve components, do not accrue leave in the same way, as they typically serve part-time unless activated.

Leave usage is subject to approval by the member's commanding officer and can be affected by factors such as operational requirements, deployment circumstances, and overall mission readiness. For instance, it's a common practice during a deployment that leave is generally not granted, except for certain circumstances like emergencies.

Additionally, each branch can offer other types of non-chargeable leave, including convalescent leave (if you are ill or injured), paternity and maternity leave, and more depending on specific circumstances. It's important to note that while the policies generally apply across each branch of the military, there may be some variation, and these policies are also subject to change.

Lastly, any leave that is not used within the fiscal year can be carried into the next year, but there is a 60-day cap on the total number of leave days that can be accumulated and rolled over from year to year. Beyond that, unused leave days may be lost. However, in certain cases, such as reenlistment, being stationed overseas, or being in a combat zone, enlisted members can carry over more than 60 days.

Overall, leave policies may vary, and understanding your particular circumstances will lead to a clearer picture of what you can expect.
