What's it like to work as a web designer?

I'm thinking about pursuing a career in web design after high school. Can anyone share what the day-to-day responsibilities are like for a web designer, and what skills or education are generally needed?

As a web designer, your day-to-day responsibilities can vary greatly based on your clientele or if you're working for a larger organization. However, most web designers share similar experiences such as meeting with clients to discuss their design needs, creating web designs and layouts using design and wireframing software, coding those designs using HTML or CSS, testing the usability of sites, and maintaining and updating these sites after they're live.

A bachelor's degree in a related field such as graphic design or computer science can be advantageous, though some might also consider associate degrees or self-taught individuals with strong portfolios. Specific skills needed often include proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript along with an understanding of responsive design and usability principles. Additionally, good visual design skills and knowledge of graphic design software (like Adobe Creative Suite) are also valuable.

Also, having a good portfolio of your design projects is imperative for job applications. This gives potential employers or clients a better understanding of your design ability and style.

Beyond technical skills, communication and problem-solving skills are also paramount since you'll regularly engage with clients or team members about project specifications and need to troubleshoot design or coding issues.

As per the job prospects, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for web developers and digital designers is projected to grow 8% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Remember, each web designer's career path might look different based on their exact role, interests and the type of companies or clients they work for, but these general trends apply to many in the field. Good luck with your future career!
