What does a paralegal's job consist of?

I'm thinking about entering the legal field as a paralegal after high school. What does a paralegal typically do each day, and is it a good introduction to law without being a lawyer?

A paralegal's role involves a good deal of supporting work for attorneys, and it's an excellent introduction to the legal field. You can expect to undertake tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, organizing files, and handling logistics related to court proceedings.

One of your main duties will be providing legal research. This means you'll be looking up laws, past court decisions, legal articles and other resources to support the attorney’s work. You may also be responsible for drafting legal documents, such as contracts or affidavits, which lawyers will review and sign.

Organizing and managing files is also a crucial part of the job. Attorneys rely on paralegals to arrange documents and evidence in a way that allows for easy access and reviewing during court proceedings or client meetings.

You'll also help with logistics. For example, you might handle scheduling court dates, client meetings, or depositions. Paralegals also handle correspondence, contacting clients, witnesses, or other lawyers to coordinate meetings or share information.

Being a paralegal can absolutely be a good introduction to the legal field and provide valuable insights into the profession. It gives you firsthand experience with legal processes and procedures and creates opportunities to learn from practicing attorneys. However, while it can be an excellent start, being a paralegal is different from being a lawyer, as lawyers have a greater depth of legal knowledge, represent clients in court, and provide legal advice.
