What does a real estate developer do?

I'm considering a career related to business or architecture and came across real estate development. What's involved in being a real estate developer, and what should I study if I'm interested in this work? Is real world experience as important as formal education?

A real estate developer's role is multifaceted. They handle a variety of tasks around procuring, planning, building, and selling properties. This could include purchasing land, designing property structures, securing financial investment, overseeing construction, and finally, marketing and selling or leasing the properties.

Given your interest in both business and architecture, real estate development could potentially be a great fit. It fuses elements of business management, finance, urban planning, architecture, among others, making it a dynamic and interdisciplinary field.

In terms of education, aspiring real estate developers often pursue degrees in fields like Real Estate, Business, Finance, Urban Planning, or Architecture. A degree in such areas can provide a solid foundation in the principles of economics, property laws, building design, market trends, and more.

However, when it comes to practical skills, real estate development also demands on-the-job experience. Understanding local laws, negotiating deals, managing relationships with investors or city officials, overseeing construction processes-- these are all skills often developed through first-hand industry exposure and practices. Internships or part-time jobs in related areas could provide valuable real-world experience.

Both education and experience are equally valuable in carving a path towards a successful career in real estate development. It's important to couple structured learning with field insights for a well-rounded comprehension of the career. Ultimately, continuous learning is key in this rapidly changing market! And as many developers would profess, every project brings its own set of challenges and learning opportunities.
