What's a trade vocational job?

I'm trying to understand what a trade vocational job involves. Like, what kind of careers would this include and how does one prepare for them? Is trade school the main path to get into these jobs?

A "trade" or "vocational" job usually refers to a skill-specific field of work, often physical or manual, such as carpentry, automotive repair, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Healthcare professions like dental hygiene, paramedics/emergency medical technicians, and medical assistants, can also fall into this category. Beauty and culinary arts, including careers such as a chef, baker, or cosmetologist, may also be categorized as trade vocations.

Typically, professionals in these fields undergo specific vocational training, rather than completing a traditional four-year bachelor's degree, which usually offers a broader education foundation, designed to apply to a range of fields. They attend trade school or a vocational school which usually takes about two years, but can be less depending on the field. It's a more streamlined form of education, as the programs are focused specifically on the skills needed for the job.

An apprenticeship is another common route to prepare for these jobs. It's more of a work-learn model where you get hands-on training under a skilled professional while earning a wage. Often, an apprenticeship can lead to a job offer after completion. It can be run through unions, trade associations, or employers and can last anywhere from one to five years.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that for most vocational jobs, some level of certification is required. Earning this certification might involve passing state or national exams to demonstrate your competency in the field.

Keep in mind that while these jobs might not require a traditional academic degree, they do involve specific skills and knowledge that make them valuable to the economy. In fact, many vocational professions are currently in high demand, so those who enter these fields can find a high level of job security.
