What does an Army ranger do?

I was thinking about the military after high school, and I heard about Army rangers. Can someone explain what their job involves and the kind of missions or tasks they usually handle?

Army Rangers are highly trained soldiers who are part of the U.S. Army's Special Operations forces. They are often assigned to challenging and high-risk operations, which may involve conducting airborne and air assault operations, seizing terrain, destroying strategic facilities, or capturing or killing enemies of the nation. This implies engagement in direct combat, often behind enemy lines.

Rangers also often lead in joint special operations units. Beyond combat, Rangers are tasked with conducting reconnaissance and surveillance in difficult terrains. They might need to move undetected through rural and urban areas or even carry out operations in hostile environments without leaving a trace.

The path to becoming an Army Ranger is rigorous and challenging. Potential Rangers must first complete basic training, Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and Airborne School. After these pre-requisite courses, they must successfully pass the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) to become a part of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Finally, to really hone their combat skills, leadership, and endurance, many Rangers choose to go through Ranger School, a 61-day combat leadership course. It's important to remember that the physical and mental demands are great, and the dropout rates are high.

Also, the rich lineage of the Rangers, expressed by their motto "Rangers Lead The Way," is spread across historical missions from World War II to modern-day conflicts. This demands upholding high standards of dedication, discipline, and honor.

Remember that being an Army Ranger is not the only way to serve in the military. There are many paths to consider. Every role within the military has its importance and contributes to the overall mission.
