A server in a restaurant typically carries a lot of responsibilities centered around ensuring that customers have a positive dining experience. Once guests are ready to order, the server takes down their order and communicates it to the kitchen staff. They keep an eye out for when each dish is ready and then serve it to guests. Beyond ensuring the food is delivered correctly, servers need to regularly check up on their tables in case guests need anything additional, like refilling drinks or extra condiments.

At the end of the meal, servers are responsible for giving the bill to the guests and processing the payment. They also clear tables after the guests leave and prepare them for the next party.

Regarding whether it's a good first job for a high school student, serving can be quite educational and rewarding but it does come with its challenges. It requires you to constantly communicate with people, which can strengthen your interpersonal skills. It can also foster time management skills, as it can get quite hectic during the peak hours. However, it is important to note that this job can be physically demanding as it requires extended periods of standing and moving around. It can also demand a lot of patience, as dealing with difficult customers will often be a part of the job.

While some restaurants might not have an age requirement, others might prefer individuals who are 18-21 and above due to liquor-serving laws. Therefore, it's always best to check with the restaurant before applying. As with any job, the decision to take up a server position should also take into consideration individual comfort and ability to manage the workload alongside school work, extracurricular activities, and other commitments.
