What's involved in being a carpenter?

Can someone shed some light on the role of a carpenter? I'm considering trades as a career path, and I'm trying to figure out what skills or training I might need for carpentry.

Sure, happy to share some insights on the field of carpentry. As a carpenter, your work largely revolves around the construction and repair of building frameworks and structures—such as stairways, doorframes, and rafters—made from wood and other materials. You might specialize in a specific area such as finishing, framing, or repairing.

In terms of skills, you would need to have a good understanding of mathematics, especially geometry, for measurements and calculations. Manual dexterity is also crucial as you'll be handling and shaping materials. You'll need good problem-solving abilities to change plans on the fly when situations dictate, and you should be physically fit, as carpentry can involve lifting heavy materials and standing for extended periods of time.

For training, most carpenters learn through a formal apprenticeship which typically takes 3-4 years to complete. This usually involves a mix of technical instruction (e.g., reading blueprints, understanding building code requirements) and paid on-the-job training. On completion of the apprenticeship, you're considered a journey worker and are qualified for most carpentry jobs. Additionally, some vocational schools offer courses related to carpentry, which can be beneficial for foundational knowledge.

Note that it's important to have knowledge of safety procedures as well, as construction sites can be dangerous places without the correct protocols. Often, protective gear like hardhats and safety glasses is a common requirement on sites.

Just keep in mind that like any career, it takes time and experience to develop the necessary skills and become proficient.
