What does a day in the life of a computer technician look like?

I'm curious about what computer technicians do on a daily basis. Is it mostly fixing things or more about setting up systems? I'm considering this as a potential career path after graduation.

A typical day in the life of a computer technician can vary greatly depending on the position. In general, there are several areas a computer technician might work in, and tasks can be diverse.

Firstly, there's the technical side. A significant portion of the day might involve diagnosing and solving hardware and software problems. This can range from replacing damaged hardware components, handling software glitches, removing viruses or malware, and setting up new equipment. In some cases, this might involve the physical aspect of pulling apart and reassembling computer systems.

Secondly, there's system maintenance. This involves regularly updating systems, installing or upgrading software, backing up data, and ensuring the proper functioning of networks.

Thirdly, a computer technician often handles user support. This can include troubleshooting problems, guiding users through steps to solve issues, training users to handle new systems, and liaising with external suppliers.

Project work can also be a part of a technician's job, such as installing new hardware or software for specific company projects.

Finally, documentation and reporting represent an important aspect of the job. This could include maintaining logs of repairs and fixes, keeping an inventory of necessary supplies, and recording IT expenses.

Interactions with people are also common, as you might be dealing with clients or team members throughout the day. You may also need to manage emergency or out-of-hours requests.

Do remember that the key to this career is lifelong learning as tech continuously evolves. It's a field that brings together problem-solving abilities, patience, good communication skills, and a genuine interest in technology.
