What's the job description of a school counselor?

I'm thinking about pursuing a career in school counseling after high school. Can anyone share what a school counselor actually does day-to-day? Is it more about academic advising, or do they focus on personal issues too?

A school counselor serves a role that intersects various aspects of a student's academic and personal life. This profession can be highly rewarding if you have a knack for fostering student success and well-being.

Typically, a school counselor has a diverse set of tasks spanning three main areas:

1. Academic development: Counselors guide students on class schedules, course selection, study habits, and academic goals. They may also help students understand their abilities and interests by administering and interpreting standardized tests and skill assessments.

2. Career and college planning: As students progress, especially in high school, counselors start assisting with college and career planning. They might help students research colleges, navigate the application process, explore different career paths, and understand the skills required for various professions.

3. Personal/Social development: Besides the academic aspect, counselors often provide assistance on personal and social matters. They may conduct one-on-one sessions to facilitate personal growth, address emotional and behavioral problems, or help manage interpersonal conflicts. They can also provide resources, referral services, and sometimes short-term counseling for students in crisis.

The day-to-day responsibilities may change depending on the school level (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school) and the specific needs of the students. Also, many school counselors are involved in creating and implementing school-wide programs such as anti-bullying initiatives, mental health awareness programs, or college readiness initiatives.

Keep in mind that while the job can be incredibly rewarding, it can also come with challenges—everything from handling crisis situations to managing large caseloads. But seeing students thrive and knowing you've helped guide them there can make it all worth it!
