What's a vocational job?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what exactly counts as a vocational job. Are these mostly trades, or can they be in other fields, too? Any examples would be awesome!

A vocational job refers to employment that requires specific training, often in a hands-on field or trade. This type of job isn't usually attained through a traditional four-year university/college education, but instead through community colleges, vocational training schools, or apprenticeships.

Many fields have vocational jobs, not just trades. Here are some examples:

1. Healthcare: The healthcare sector has many vocational jobs. For instance, jobs like a Medical Assistant, a Dental Hygienist, a Paramedic, or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) all qualify. These positions typically require certification programs or associate degrees.

2. Skilled Trades: This is perhaps the most recognized vocational field. You have roles such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons, welders, and HVAC technicians. These professions often require apprenticeships in addition to technical training.

3. Technology: Believe it or not, there are also vocational jobs in tech. For instance, people can attend a coding boot camp - an intensive, typically months-long program - and become a full-stack developer without a traditional degree.

4. Culinary Arts: Chefs and bakers often attend culinary schools or apprenticeships rather than a traditional four-year institution.

5. Cosmetology: Jobs such as hairstylists, makeup artists, and estheticians involve vocational training at beauty schools.

Remember, vocational jobs are prevalent in virtually all sectors, and they're a great alternative to traditional university education depending on your interests and career goals.
