What Are the Responsibilities of a Stage Manager?

I'm considering joining the theater club and maybe exploring stage management in college. Can someone explain what the job role of a stage manager includes? How involved are they during performances?

As someone deeply invested in the college theater scene, I can shed light on the versatile role of a Stage Manager (SM) in a theatrical production.

Firstly, a Stage Manager performs a crucial bridging function between various departments involved in a production, acting as the main point of communication. They liaise between the director, actors, designers, and technicians. Therefore, good communication skills are as much a part of the stage manager's remit as logistical competence.

In the pre-production phase, the SM usually assists with auditions, notes down significant director's decisions during rehearsals, and prepares a prompt script with all the cues (for lights, sound, scene changes) to anticipate during a performance.

Another aspect of their job involves managing rehearsals. This includes scheduling, tracking attendance, and ensuring that props, costumes, and equipment are at the right place at the right time. Their task is to make sure everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

As the production nears opening day, the SM may direct technical rehearsals, known as 'techs', focusing on integrating lighting, sound, and scenic changes into the performance. During performances, the stage manager "calls the show". This means they're in charge of giving cues to the actors, crew, and the orchestra if there is one, to ensure everything on and off the stage runs smoothly and as planned.

Post-show responsibilities can include providing performance reports to key personnel and ensuring that the stage is cleared and ready for the next performance or rehearsal.

Overall, the SM's role during performances is "behind the scenes", but essential for the successful execution of the show. The role requires organization, quick problem-solving skills, and a strong understanding of the entire production process. It's a fantastic opportunity to develop skills that can serve you well in numerous other fields, not just in theater.
