Colleges with Computer Science and Bioinformatics Programs?

I'm thinking about combining my interest in computer science with bioinformatics for college. What are some universities that have quality programs in both these fields?

Absolutely! There are many universities that offer excellent programs in both Computer Science and Bioinformatics.

1. Stanford University: Known for its strength in technology and engineering, Stanford has an exceptional Computer Science department along with a highly-renowned Bioinformatics program.

2. University of California, Berkeley: UC Berkeley's Computer Science department consistently ranks among the best in the United States. Their Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program offers an interdisciplinary education involving the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.

3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): MIT has an outstanding reputation for Computer Science. They also have a Computational and Systems Biology program which could provide the bioinformatics education you're interested in.

4. Carnegie Mellon University: Carnegie Mellon has a strong School of Computer Science as well as a Computational Biology Department. The latter offers an undergraduate major in Computational Biology, an interdisciplinary program that trains students on the interface of biology and computational science.

5. University of Washington, Seattle: Their Computer Science & Engineering department is top-tier, and the school also offers a unique Computational Biology & Bioinformatics program.

When looking at colleges, I'd recommend looking closely at the specifics of their Bioinformatics programs since this is a broad field and different colleges may have slightly different emphases. It might also be helpful to look at what kind of research the faculty at these schools is participating in to give you an idea of the opportunities available to you.

Remember, you can major in Computer Science and then choose a concentration or minor in Bioinformatics, or vice versa, depending on the school and its course offerings. This could be an excellent way of gaining expertise in both fields, setting the foundation for a strong interdisciplinary career. Good luck!
