Looking for the best programs in environmental engineering is an excellent way to start tailoring your college list. Here are some universities you might consider, ranked highly based on faculty, research output, and unique opportunities in the field:

1. Stanford University: Stanford's environmental engineering program is one of the top in the country. They focus on key areas including air quality, environmental fluid mechanics and hydrology, and environmental health.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is top-notch. They strongly encourage interdisciplinary study, and you'd have many research opportunities.

3. University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley): UC Berkeley's environmental engineering program combines elements of civil engineering and science disciplines. The program is well-equipped with extensive research facilities.

4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech): While Caltech doesn't have a dedicated Environmental Engineering department, they offer a major in Environmental Science and Engineering. This gives you a broader scientific foundation, including aspects of chemistry, biology, and geology.

5. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (UMich): UMich has an established environmental engineering program with a focus on sustainable systems, water quality, hydrology and water resources.

Keep in mind that the best college for you isn't simply about rankings but also about how well the program fits with your specific interests and career goals. Be sure to check out each school's curriculum, research opportunities, student organizations, and internship connections related to environmental engineering.
