Best School for Mechanical Engineering with Aviation Focus?

I'm into both mechanical engineering and airplanes. Are there colleges known for combining these two fields, or should I focus solely on mechanical engineering?

While many colleges and universities offer strong programs in mechanical engineering, there are few schools that specifically integrate an aviation focus. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean you can't obtain an education that simultaneously develops your mechanical engineering skills and nurtures your passion for aviation.

Purdue University, for instance, not only has a top-tier engineering program, but it also has an excellent aviation and aerospace program within the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology. The Aviation Technology department offers courses related to the design and manufacturing of aircraft.

The University of Michigan also offers well-regarded Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering programs, and you can typically cross-register for courses across the disciplines. This could enable you to combine mechanical engineering with aerospace-specific classes.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is also worth considering. While it's less recognized for a broad mechanical engineering program, it's one of the top schools for aeronautical and aerospace engineering. It could offer you the unique blend of engineering and aviation knowledge you're seeking.

Remember, you should also consider internships, research opportunities, and student clubs related to aviation, as these can significantly supplement your coursework. Many schools have student-led teams that participate in AIAA Design/Build/Fly competitions, and involvement in these types of activities can provide practical experience at the intersection of mechanical engineering and aviation.
