Mid-Atlantic Schools for Environmental Science?

I'm considering studying environmental science in the Mid-Atlantic region. Can anyone recommend colleges with strong programs or special projects related to sustainability and the environment? Any unique student experiences to share?

Sure, there are a few schools you might want to consider in the Mid-Atlantic region for a strong program in environmental science. The first that comes to mind is the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). Their Environmental Science and Policy program is multidisciplinary and gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world situations.

UMD also has the Sustainability Initiative which aims to foster sustainable behavior on and off campus. There are many student-led projects within this initiative that address sustainability in food, waste, energy, and more. This could be a great way to gain practical experience and create a tangible impact in the community.

Then there's Penn State. Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has a strong Environmental Resource Management program where students gain hands-on experience through field and lab work. Also, the college's Sustainability Institute offers research, teaching, and outreach initiatives centered around sustainability.

Rutgers University in New Jersey also has a robust Environmental Sciences program. They offer the "SEBS" (School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) Scholar program for high-achieving students, which has many opportunities for independent research and experiential learning in the field of environmental science.

As a final point, while looking at programs, don't forget to research the research opportunities, internships, and co-op possibilities on offer—these can greatly enhance your understanding and application of your studies. Plus, being in the Mid-Atlantic region, many of these colleges partner with local environmental agencies or nonprofits that provide students with unique, hands-on experience. So, keep an eye out for those types of opportunities as you continue your search.
