Science writing programs at top colleges

I want to study science writing but have no idea which colleges have strong programs. Do any top schools shine in this area for undergrads? It's important to me to get both solid science and writing education.

Definitely, a few top-tier schools stand out for their solid programs in both science and writing - MIT, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Chicago come to mind.

MIT's Science Writing program, although it is a graduate-level program, gives undergraduates a great opportunity to delve into the subject. They also have a wonderful Creative Writing and Literature program that undergraduate students can take advantage of. Their science courses are, of course, world-renowned, offering you a comprehensive foundation in this field.

Johns Hopkins University also has a Science Writing program at the graduate level, but undergrads can take advantage of exceptional programs in both Writing Seminars and Natural Sciences. You can get a sense of the field before pursuing higher-level studies if you still desire.

The University of Chicago offers a special major called History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine (HIPS) that might be of interest. This program allows students to explore scientific knowledge in a broad social context. They also have a strong creative writing curriculum, which would help fine-tune your writing skills for scientific content.

Remember, some schools may not offer a specific undergraduate science writing program, but it's perfectly possible to forge your own path. Double majoring (or majoring and minoring) in natural science and creative writing/journalism can equip you with the skills to enter the field. Research experiences, intern bios, science journalism internships, writing for the school newspaper, or starting a science blog could also be beneficial.
