Top colleges for biomedical engineering in Pennsylvania

I'm interested in studying biomedical engineering and would love to know which colleges in Pennsylvania are highly recommended. How do they stand out in terms of faculty, research opportunities, or internships?

There are quite a few colleges in Pennsylvania that offer excellent biomedical engineering programs.

The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is definitely one of the top options. It has the number one ranked biomedical engineering program in Pennsylvania by U.S. News and boasts a faculty that includes leaders in the field. The program at UPenn provides students with a plethora of research opportunities since several faculty members run labs, and many of them are engaged in multidisciplinary and collaborative research through the Institute for Medicine and Engineering and the Center for Bioengineering. Additionally, The School of Engineering is located in University City Philadelphia which offers plenty of job and networking opportunities as well.

Next, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) also offers a strong biomedical engineering program. What sets CMU apart is its focus on hands-on learning and research starting in the first year itself, providing students with a wealth of practical experience. CMU also favors an interdisciplinary approach and encourages students to seek out dual degrees or additional majors to complement their engineering interests.

Finally, Drexel University is renowned for its co-op program, which integrates up to 18 months of professional work experience with classroom learning. Biomedical engineering students at Drexel majorly benefit from this program, gaining considerable real-world experience before they even graduate.

With regards to internships, being in Pennsylvania gives students access to a range of healthcare and biotech companies that offer fruitful internships. As always, it's important to find a program that's the right fit for you personally and in line with your academic interests and career goals. Good luck as you navigate the college search process!
