What does a special education teacher do?

I'm interested in possibly becoming a special education teacher after college. Could someone explain what their daily responsibilities are, and what skills are most important for the job?

A special education teacher primarily works with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Their responsibilities can be varied and extensive, just like a mainstream teacher, but are directed towards adapting and developing lessons to meet the individual needs of their students. Furthermore, special education teachers interface with other school personnel such as general education teachers, school psychologists, and parents to best support and advance their students' academic achievement.

On a daily basis, they might be developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that outline the specific goals and objectives needed for each student. These plans can include modifications to teaching methods, assessment techniques, and classroom accommodations.

A huge part of the job centers around adapting and presenting instructional material in ways that meet the needs of diverse learners. This can involve using movement, visual cues, and hands-on activities. You might also find yourself teaching basic skills to students with severe disabilities, like literacy and numeracy, as well as life skills.

Alongside classroom teaching, responsibilities can also include assessing students’ skills to determine their needs and potential for improvement. This often requires keeping careful records, evaluating progress, and refining IEPs as necessary.

In terms of skills, patience and understanding are paramount given the nature of the job. Exceptional organizational skills and detail-orientation are vital for managing IEPs and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential for liaising with a diverse team of professionals, parents, and students. Moreover, creativity is often called upon in adapting teaching strategies for different learners. Lastly, resilience is crucial, as the job can come with its share of emotional and physical challenges, but the rewards, many educators say, are unparalleled.
