What does 'vocational job' mean?

I've seen the term 'vocational job' mentioned a lot, but I'm still unsure what it means. Is it different from a regular job? How do vocational paths impact my career options after high school?

A vocational job refers to employment that is more focused on skills and training obtained for a specific trade or profession. These roles tend to place more emphasis on practical application and hands-on work. Examples of vocational careers include roles such as electrician, plumber, hair stylist, dental hygienist, chef, and many others. These roles are critical in our society and can often result in a fulfilling career with solid job security.

In terms of career options after high school, deciding to go for a vocational job can open doors to industries that value technical skills and experience over academic degrees. Vocational jobs can sometimes have a quicker entry time into the workforce after high school as well. Instead of a four-year college degree, vocational paths often involve certifications, apprenticeships, or vocational training programs, which can typically be completed in two years or less.

However, it's important to remember that just like a traditional job, success in a vocational career requires dedication, ongoing learning, and skill development. It's important to research and consider your own interests, career goals, and the job market in your area before making a decision.
