Which Cal State college is best for the practical side of computer science?

I'm more interested in the hands-on, practical aspects of computer science rather than theoretical. Which Cal State colleges offer a strong program focused on practical experience and applied learning in computer science?

While all Cal States provide solid computer science programs, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Pomona are the two Cal State colleges that stand out due to their heavy emphasis on the "learn by doing" approach.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Computer Science Department operates a hands-on curriculum right from the first year. They encourage project-based learning, with courses designed to provide students with a firm foundation in programming, web development, and app development. The senior project also offers students the opportunity to create a product independently or in collaboration with a small team, simulating a real-world software development process.

Similarly, Cal Poly Pomona's program also focuses on the practical application of computer science theory. Students work on a Senior Design Project, either working with a faculty member on research or in a team designing, developing, testing, and deploying software. They also have a strong co-op and internships program which provides students ample opportunities to gain practical workplace experience.

It's important to note though that your college choice shouldn't just be based on the program. Take into account factors like campus culture, financial feasibility, location, and other personal preferences. It also might be beneficial to look at the course catalogs of the colleges you're considering to get a better understanding of the curriculum and the emphases of the courses. Finally, visit the campuses if possible, and speak to current students or alumni in the program to get a real feel for the college. Good luck!
