What does a counselor actually do?

I'm really interested in helping people and considering becoming a counselor. Could someone explain what exactly a counselor's job includes and what kind of training or education is necessary?

Different types of counselors have varying roles, so I'll provide an overview of a few types.

High school counselors, for example, guide students in making academic and career choices. They advise on appropriate courses for students' goals, assist with college applications, provide resources for test preparation, and deal with any social or behavioral issues. They often have a diploma in school counseling or a related field. They might also conduct group or individual sessions.

A college admissions counselor, on the other hand, reviews student applications to determine a student's suitability for their college. They consider a student's academic performance, test scores, extracurricular activities, and personal essays. They often hold presentations and events to attract potential applicants. Most admissions counselors have a bachelor's degree. While not always required, a master's degree in education or counseling can be an asset.

On the other end of the spectrum are career counselors, who help people make career decisions. They assess a client's skills, interests, and personality through questionnaires and discussions, help with résumé building, and guide clients through the job search process. They might also provide advice on career changes or continuing education. Most career counselors hold a master's degree in career counseling or a related field.

In terms of training, for most types of counseling, a master's degree in the counseling field is necessary. You'll also need a state-issued certification or license to practice. This typically requires a number of supervised hours in the field—think, internships or practicums. Continued education is often required in this profession, as it's vital to stay updated with counseling techniques and research developments.

Please note that the requirements can vary based on where you live and the type of counseling you intend to practice, so it's important to research specific qualifications for your region and area of interest.
