What's it like working as a dental hygienist?

I'm really interested in dental hygiene as a career. What exactly does a dental hygienist do during their job? Is it mostly cleanings, or are there other responsibilities involved? Would love some insights!

As a dental hygienist, you'll get to interact with patients of all ages and backgrounds which can be quite rewarding. Aside from providing cleanings, your responsibilities would encapsulate a broad spectrum of dental care and health education.

During a typical cleaning session, you'll be responsible for removing plaque and tartar buildup from each patient's teeth. This might involve using various tools or possibly an ultrasonic device. Additionally, applying sealants and fluoride treatments would be part of routine procedures.

A significant aspect of this role is taking dental X-rays. These are crucial in helping dentists identify issues unseen to the naked eye, such as cavities hiding between teeth or problems beneath the gums. Most states regulate this practice and you'll need to be certified to perform it.

Aside from these clinical tasks, one of the most crucial parts of a dental hygienist's work is education. You're in a unique position to guide patients toward maintaining good oral health. You'd advise them on aspects like brushing and flossing techniques, the correct use of oral hygiene products, diet, and general lifestyle choices affecting oral health.

Furthermore, preliminary patient assessments would be in your purview. During check-ups, you'd busy yourself with checking patients for signs of oral diseases like gingivitis, and then report back to the dentist about the patient's oral health status.

Finally, note that the exact scope of your responsibilities can depend on the regulations of the state in which you work.
