Considering a career as a restaurant owner: what does it entail?

I've always been interested in food and might want to own a restaurant one day. Can anyone break down what being a restaurant owner involves? Would you recommend studying hospitality or business in college for this path?

Firstly, you'll need to manage business operations - this involves overseeing the day-to-day operations, ensuring that the restaurant is running smoothly, monitoring food and supplies inventory, and fulfilling roles in customer service, HR, and quality control.

You'll also have a big part in setting and maintaining the restaurant's atmosphere, which includes interior design, menu creation, music selection, and customer service standards. Furthermore, owners often oversee hiring and training of staff, and on certain occasions, you might have to step in and perform various roles, from server to cook.

Concerning your education path, while it's not mandatory to have a degree in business or hospitality to own a restaurant, it can be definitely beneficial. A degree in Business can equip you with important knowledge about managing finances, marketing, and strategic planning. Yet, a Hospitality degree would focus more on the food and beverage industry specifically, and you'd gain relevant skills in restaurant management, customer service, and food safety.
