What are the tasks of a web designer?

I'm super interested in web design and thinking about if it could be a career path for me. Can anyone share what the day-to-day work looks like for a web designer?

Web designers perform a variety of tasks that can vary depending on the specific project they're working on, but some common tasks include:

Designing Website Layout: One of the main responsibilities is to design visual elements such as the layout and color scheme of a website. This involves creating a functional and visually appealing website that enhances user experience (UX).

Creating Website Graphics: Web designers often need to create or select images for the website, which can include logos, illustrations, or other graphic elements. They may also be responsible for optimizing the images for web use to ensure fast loading times.

Wireframing and Prototyping: Before a site is built, web designers can map out the basic structure and user flow of the site using wireframes. These are simplified outlines of the website's layout. From there, they often create prototypes which are more detailed versions of the wireframes, featuring elements like menus, buttons, and design details.

UI Design: Another responsibility is User Interface (UI) design, ensuring that the website's interface is user-friendly and easy to navigate. This involves creating a cohesive style guide and ensuring that a consistent design language is applied across the website.

Performing User Testing: Often, web designers help perform user testing, collecting feedback from users about the usability of the site and making necessary adjustments based on that feedback.

Coding: Some web designers also have coding skills and can use languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to bring their designs to life on the web. Not all web designers code, though, and often they work closely with web developers who specialize in this area.

Working with Content Management Systems: Web designers often work with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla, which allow for the creation and modification of digital content on a website.

Collaborating with clients and colleagues: Web designers often work in a collaborative environment, receiving feedback and making adjustments based on client needs, and working alongside other designers, developers, and stakeholders in the website project.

It's important to note that the specific tasks you'll be doing can change depending on whether you're a freelancer, part of an agency team, or working in-house at a company. But overall, the tasks above represent the type of work you can expect to do in a web design role.
