Curious About the Role of a Camp Counselor

I'm thinking about becoming a camp counselor next summer and am wondering what the main responsibilities are. What skills or traits do I need to have, and what should I expect from the job?

Camp counselors have various roles that often center around ensuring campers are safe, engaged, and having fun. A significant portion of your duties will involve leading group activities and games, which could range from arts and crafts to sports. Emergency response preparation, such as first aid and CPR knowledge, is generally essential for the job, too.

One of the paramount traits of a good camp counselor is patience. You'll be dealing with a diverse group of children, each with their own personalities, quirks, and potential behavioral issues. It's also important to be energetic, as the job demands involvement and enthusiasm to foster a fun atmosphere.

Another critical skill is strong communication. You need to effectively communicate instructions to kids, converse with other staff members, and potentially interact with parents or guardians. Alongside communication, conflict resolution skills will also be beneficial to manage any disagreements or issues among campers. In many situations, counselors act as mediators to ensure everyone leaves the conflict feeling understood and satisfied.
