What does a landscape architect do?

I'm considering landscape architecture as a potential career path after high school. What exactly does a landscape architect do on a day-to-day basis? Would it be a good fit for someone who enjoys both design and nature?

A landscape architect plays an essential role in preserving and improving the environment by planning and designing outdoor spaces, both public and private. They work on various scales of projects, from designing entire urban gardens and park systems to individual residential landscapes.

When it comes to the daily responsibilities, landscape architects spend a lot of time researching, planning, and designing land areas by crafting proposals using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software, as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). They also perform site analyses, including assessing the climate, flora and fauna, soil, and existing infrastructure on the site.

Collaboration is a big part of a landscape architect's job. They work closely with clients, engineers, architects, and city planners to brainstorm and design spaces that meet various needs ─ aesthetic, environmental, and social.

When the design phase concludes, they oversee the implementation of their plans, ensuring their designs are carried out as envisioned. This means managing contracts, budgets, and schedules, and rectifying any complications or challenges that arise during construction.

In terms of work environment, they split their time between their offices (where the design happens) and project sites where they oversee the implementation of their plans and designs.

If you love design and nature, landscape architecture could indeed be an excellent fit for you! You would get to channel your creativity into designing beautiful environments that merge the man-made with the natural while enhancing the habitats of local flora and fauna. It's a fulfilling career path that unites creative expression with environmental stewardship.

Keep in mind, though, to become a landscape architect, you will typically need a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture (BLA or BSLA) or a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture (MLA), along with getting licensed by passing the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE). These are some points you might need to consider when thinking about your future education pathway.
